Default MagicPrefs

Wish you Magic Mouse could do more? I certainly do.

When it was released, a lot of people said that developers could potentially make improved drivers for the Magic Mouse so it could perform extra gestures and advanced things like that. There have already been a few utilities that extend the functionality of the Magic Mouse but I've found one that actually does a good job, so far.

MagicPrefs is yet another application that sits in the menu bar (as if I don't have enough of those!) It adds support for extra clicks and gestures, I haven't fully explored all the options yet but there's an option for middle click, two finger clicks, three finger clicks, three finger swipes, you can even program functions to the Apple logo at the end of the mouse.

The coolest feature of MagicPrefs is an image of the Magic Mouse, when you touch or click the mouse, an overlay shows where your fingers are in real time!

So far MagicPrefs is pretty good, I've only got middle click enabled but I haven't activated it by accident yet, everything seems to be working as it should.

Anyway, check it out, play around. It's free so you can't loose.

Let us know how it goes after a few days of playing with it.

Sure. I'll play around with some of the more advanced gestures. There's a myriad of combinations to try.

Like for when you are using your computer blindfolded or something??

Or you've got your mouse under the desk so your mum can't see you playing with it?

Cheers,

P

Big Big Big issue!

It turns out that these gestures also apply to the trackpad in current laptops, i.e. if I touch the bottom-centre of my trackpad it does the same as tapping the Apple on the mouse. If I have a finger in the middle of the trackpad and I click, it does the same as middle-clicking on the mouse. Basically it makes using the trackpad a massive mess. Goodbye, MagicPrefs.

So every change you make for the Magic Mouse also applies to the trackpad, that sucks.

I gave up trying to get my Magic Mouse gestures into some sort of manageable state. Things were opening closing happening beyond my control! Not a comfortable place to be.

I've been using Better Touch Tool with a great deal of success for about a month now. It doesn't affect the trackpad and offers a great deal of flexibility. Just be careful what you assign to do what - some of the single finger taps can interfere with scrolling and clicking.
