Ouch. As an addendum to my Blog post a month or two back, I'm listening to my own advice now and going with Telstra to get the best experience. I hate them so much, and they're expensive, but what good is an awesome phone if you can't make calls/use data on it?

I have noticed and I'm surprised. Two of my friends have an iPhone, out of the blue they show up with iPhones. It was like culture shock. It's hard not to go out and see at least one person using an iPhone. Look, there's one, there's another and another and I never knew they were so popular. When did this happen?

Re: Apps and Mobile OS - iPod touch <=> iPhone?
As mentioned elsewhere I had a Genius Bar appointment scheduled for 10:50 this morning at Apple Doncaster, Vic, to discuss the problems mentioned in this thread regarding iP* OS updates/upgrades. I explained to the guy my broadband set-up with its slower speed and the rural issues of flaky power supply (regular brown-outs, short and longer blackouts, all generally weather related.) My point was to enlist the Genius Bar to do these updates/upgrades for me - I would have been very happy to pay for the service - much preferable to the difficulties I was having. The guy could not have been more accommodating. If I made an appointment when needed the updates would be done free-of-charge.
Additionally the guy said that users were welcome to take their laptops to an Apple Store at any time to make use of the free WiFi to conduct update downloads. Of course if I had a MacBook to which my iP* was paired I could have done the iP* update myself in the Doncaster Store. We do have a laptop (Mrs Gazza's) but my iP* is paired with my iMac for backup, downloads, syncing etc.
Thanks Apple, great service.

I was only thinking today how awesome it would be if Apple and Microsoft could team up with McDonalds to offer the same thing - free OS and patch updates over their in-store wifi.

Thanks Golfer, I've been off line for a while.
I've only heard/read bad things about the Optus experience with iPhones.
Mostly data connections, but anyone I know with Optus experiences way more call dropouts as well compared to Telstra. I have Telstra because it's a work phone, but I chose them for my wife's iPhone too.

Interesting, although I presume that'd be an upgrade and wipe (i.e you'd have a blank iPhone/touch until you got home and did your own re-sync again)
Or does Apple have a backdoor way of applying the upgrades in a non-destructive fashion from other Macs? Did they mention one way or another? I could see some consumers presuming everything would be "OK" (which in a sense it would be, just delayed) and panicking when they couldn't play Flight Control after the upgrade...

I'm pretty sure iPhones can be updated from a computer it's not synced with. I'm certain I've updated mine from my PowerBook even though it's synced with my Mac mini. None of the apps or data was erased when updating.

Clinton, it's always been my understanding that you can only update/upgrade the iP* OS from one Mac. The Genius I spoke with intimated that this was the case (I didn't ask him directly) when he said you can bring into the Apple store the MacBook that you sync with to download updates.

This impression I got Alex was that the update/upgrade in the Apple store would involve a "wipe" and it would then be necessary to sync on my Mac back home for (non-Apple) Apps, data, songs, photos, etc. However, as I said to Clinton above, I didn't directly ask the question! I will on next update to 3.1.4 (or will it be 3.2 by then? OR maybe 4.0 with the next generation iPhone?)

I'll have to try it the next time an update comes out.
