Default Aperture 3 Knowledge Base Article TS 3231

Apple has just published a new KB article to address a couple of problems, "After you upgrade Aperture from an earlier version to Aperture 3, Aperture may quit unexpectedly when opening or when you enter the Aperture 3 upgrade serial number." (However nothing yet, unfortunately, on the widely discussed memory leak problem.)

On the same page are links to related topics:

* How to properly reinstall Aperture....;

* How can I change a serial number;

* Is Aperture licence good on multiple machines;

* More questions about Aperture Library backup.

Thanks Gazza,
For the record the answer to that question is as follows. I found out by accident that one can't keep the two copies open on the network, when I was trying to compare a couple of photos in libraries on each of my machines!

cheers,

P

Quote:
"B. Single User License. This License allows you to install and use one copy of the Apple Software on one Apple-labeled desktop computer and
one Apple-labeled laptop computer so long as both computers are owned and used by you. You may use the Apple Software and any third
party digital photo content contained in or otherwise included with the Apple Software, on a royalty-free basis, to create your own original
digital photo products, however, the third party content is provided as part of the Apple Software bundle and may not be commercially or
otherwise distributed on a standalone basis.
"

So you can use it on two computers, if one is a desktop and one is a laptop. Note, Aperture will not run on two computers in the same network at the same time on a single serial # -- it will make you quit the first copy before the second one launches. As far as the differentiation between a desktop and laptop machine... that's up to you I think.

I think I *just* scrape in... Dad and I both have it installed on our MacBook Pros, but his spends 99% of its life as a desktop machine (hiding under the bench) and I use mine as a laptop every day at school. Close enough?

I haven't investigated memory leaks as yet but Aperture has been playing funny buggers with my keyboard.

A couple of days ago I found that I couldn't type anything, after about five key presses I would get an error sound. Then I couldn't click anything, I could move the mouse but clicks wouldn't register. Aperture was open at the time and was busy importing photos from iPhoto. Later on my menu bar completely disappeared and I couldn't quit Applications, I couldn't even Force Quit applications. I had to ssh from my PowerBook and run killall.

That keyboard/mouse problem solved itself after a restart but I now have a new keyboard problem with Faces. When naming unnamed Faces, Aperture thinks the letter "s" is the letter "m", "g" is "o" and "t" is "p". It takes five tries for Aperture to get the right letter. I've filed a bug report with Apple, hopefully they address it in the 3.0.1 update.

Also Faces beachballs like you wouldn't believe.

After reading this article on US Macworld, I've found that the memory leaks might be the cause of my problems.

I think what I might do is wait for an update and re-import my iPhoto Library into Aperture, this time using my dad's iMac and a brand new 1 TB drive so I don't run out of space this time.

Everything seems to have turned out alright but I'll do it again just to be sure.
